You might have been hearing radio ads in recent days touting Congressman Rodney Davis’s work on behalf of veterans.

But if you thought it sounded like a campaign ad, you were mistaken. It’s actually a taxpayer-funded radio ad. A disclaimer at the end states, “Paid for by official funds, authorized by the House of Representatives.” Davis’s office says the 60-second commercial was paid for through the use of “franking privileges,” which allows members to spend some of their office allowance to communicate with constituents about services the office provides. While historically associated with direct mail pieces, the money can also be used for radio ads.

Davis’s office says the ad was cleared by both Democratic and Republican congressional staffers to make sure it follows all congressional rules.
