Springfield aldermen and Mayor Jim Langfelder’s staff have submitted nearly two dozen amendments to the proposed city budget ahead of the scheduled final vote on Tuesday.

The single biggest change is proposed by Alderman Joe McMenamin, who wants to reduce the budget for new firehouse construction from $12 million down to $4 million, with that total coming from federal pandemic relief dollars. McMenamin also wants to allocate an additional $2 million toward police and fire pensions.

Meanwhile, the mayor’s budget office is also proposing a reduction in the fire department construction budget… and would move some of that money toward the purchase of vehicles and equipment. The City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday evening to consider the proposed changes and approve the budget. You can see the full list of proposed budget amendments here.
