A dentist from Rochester is facing multiple federal charges accusing him of diverting drugs from his practice for his personal use, and then falsifying records to cover up his actions.

61-year-old Phillip Jensen remains in custody pending a detention hearing Thursday. He’s accused of tampering with vials of fentanyl, which was to be used as an anesthetic for his patients, removing half from the drug from each vial and setting it aside for his personal use. Prosecutors say Jensen then replaced the missing amount with another solution, and then gave the diluted fentanyl to his patients.

In one case, a patient reportedly sustained a serious bodily injury from having received the altered drug. Jensen is facing a total of 20 federal counts, with the most serious carrying sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
