The City of Springfield says an arrangement to store a city vehicle in an airport hangar free of charge dates back to 1999… and questions why it’s now become a new source of conflict between the city and the airport.

Airport authority board chairman Frank Vala has asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to investigate whether the arrangement may violate any rules or laws. A spokesperson for Mayor Jim Langfelder says the agreement for storage space for the city police Mobile Command Unit dates back to former Mayor Karen Hasara… and notes that the agreement was in place during Vala’s entire tenure as airport board chair.

The city says it began paying rent for space in a different hangar two years ago.
