The state’s largest teachers union says the threat of violence in Illinois schools is on the rise… and it wants more done to make sure that school districts are properly identifying and preparing for such threats.

The Illinois Education Association says there has been a rise in fights and other violent incidents in schools, and thinks it’s partly because of increase stress and pressure on students related to the pandemic. The IEA is concerned that some school districts are not in compliance with a state law that requires them to create a school threat assessment team and develop protocols for dealing with those situations. The union is supporting a bipartisan bill to tighten that 2019 law and require public reporting and disclosure of non-compliance.

Springfield District 186 says it is in compliance with the law.
