Chicago is bracing for a possible onslaught of violence over the Memorial Day weekend. The holiday weekend often sees an increase in shootings.

Governor JB Pritzker has assigned 30 “peacekeepers” to troubled areas of Chicago in an effort to anticipate and defuse situations before they get out of hand.

UIS Professor Magic Wade, who studies gun violence, says she’s unsure how effective the effort will be, but says she’s glad officials are trying to be proactive, rather than reactive, to the violence.
