UPDATE 6:00 pm: The death toll has climbed to seven from Monday’s deadly pileup south of Springfield.

Illinois State Police say the severity of the crash masked the remains, and what was initially thought to be one victim turned out to be two.

State police are asking for the public’s help to identify some of the victims of the wreck on Interstate 55. One person’s identity has been confirmed, and tentative IDs have been made for others people. But state police director Brendan Kelly says help is needed to determine the identities of victims found in two vehicles.

One was a blue Chrysler 300, the other was a Hyundai – but police have little additional information about either vehicle because they were extensively damaged in the crash.

Anyone with information about the victims’ identities or other aspects of the wreck is asked to call state police at 618-346-3653.

The interstate reopened early Tuesday after crews worked for hours to clear the wreckage, but was temporarily closed again later in the day after high winds whipped up more dust clouds.
