The new legislative session that starts in January could include a vote on a statewide assault weapons ban.

House Speaker Chris Welch doesn’t anticipate action on that proposal until the new legislature is seated, since then it would only take a simple majority to pass an immediate ban, instead of the supermajority that would be needed during the fall veto session.

Governor JB Pritzker has urged lawmakers to approve a ban on the sale of military-style weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines.
