There was a time when MTV was an genuine source of music AND pop culture, as compared to today’s MTV which has the pop culture stuff if you just considered that as reality shows and ‘Ridiculousness’. In the 90’s, MTV was also a really strong source for music journalism and serious conversations about how music plays into our cultutre as a whole. Here is a great example of that with the ‘Year in the Rock 1991’ which feature some QLZ beloved bands like Metallica, Guns ‘n Roses, Van Halen, AC/DC and many more. One of the more serious topics discussed on this TV special was how the financial recession impacted the music world, and considering that is hot topic in the present, it is very interesting to see how it compares to a time when the way we consumed media was very different.

There are some very surprising omissions in this special hosted by Kurt Loder and Tabitha Soren including a detailed look into the seismic explosion that was Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ album but Loder did need to give more look into how the United States entered into the Gulf War with Iraq, so it balances out.

Every weekday at 12pm, 97.7 QLZ goes back to this very different and innovative decade in rock music with 90’s Nooner. You will hear nothing but 90’s rock with slices of nostalgia that scratch the right itch and smell like teen spirit.

Here are some musical slices of the time.
