With sunny skies and warm temperatures expected for most of the holiday weekend, and beyond, local experts are putting out reminders about sun safety.

HSHS St. John’s Hospital says it’s important to apply sunscreen whenever you are outdoors… even on cloudy days, because 80-percent of the sun’s rays can still get through cloud cover. To protect against sunburn and an increased risk of skin cancer, you should use a sunblock of at least SPF 30… and if you’ll be swimming, make sure it’s water resistant.

You should also check the expiration date, and throw out any sunscreen that is past its shelf life.
