Unemployment fell in December in all major metro areas of Illinois, including Springfield.
The Springfield area’s jobless rate was 3.9 percent last month, down from 4.2 percent in November… and a steep drop from the 7.3 percent unemployment rate in December of 2020. State officials say the city added three-thousand jobs over the past year, with the biggest increase coming in the battered leisure and hospitality sector.
The numbers may not reflect the full brunt of the renewed COVID surge, as cases began to spike late in the month.
