The Good, The Bad & The Nerdy for December 29, 2017
Above is a supercut of 2017’s selection of movies, created by Youtuber CLS Videos. How many movies did you check out this year? Were there any that came out elsewhere, but we couldn’t enjoy in Springfield theaters?
All six new episodes of Charlie Brooker’s hit Netflix anthology Black Mirror series will feature female protagonists, unintentionally mirroring the cultural moment we are currently in. “Charlie and I don’t tend to think about the stories that way. Sometimes, it just comes out,” exec producer Annabel Jones tells The Hollywood Reporter. “But it’s great — great! — that they’re all strong female protagonists. I think what’s lovely about the show is that it’s not a strident statement. It’s more: Why not? We don’t even think about it from a gender perspective and I hope that’s progress. It’s more that we explore the best story and the best way to tell it.”
What an amazing mash-up! Above is a fan-made trailer reimagining Star Wars in the style of 2017 hist Baby Driver. Check it out above, then try to tell me – with a straight face – that you wouldn’t watch the crap out of this.
In a recent interview on Doctor Who: The Fan Show, outgoing showrunner Steve Moffat revealed that Bill Potts’ (Pearl Mackie) role in Doctor Who‘s “Twice Upon a Time” episode was actually added into the script later on: “I was 20 pages into the script and I was slightly stuck.” Moffat explained. “And I thought: ‘I just want to hear what Bill’s got to say.’ I had been so used to writing Bill, and she’d been such an invigorating, exciting presence throughout series 10, I just thought I feel it is wasted, the Doctor meeting his older/younger self, and all his political incorrectness. It is wasted, if Bill does not witness this and comment on this. And if she doesn’t instantly work out who that is to the Doctor’s horror, if Bill doesn’t explain certain aspects of her modern life to the First Doctor, it is wasted.”
Finally for 2017, a vengeful Selma Blair and Nicolas Cage are here to play in the first teaser for Mom and Dad. The film centers on a mass hysteria that has taken over the parents of Earth as their offspring attempt to emerge from their clutches alive. Mom and Dad lands in theaters on January 19th.
