The Top Rock Stories of 2012

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

It’s the end of the year and what craziness 2012 has been for the rock world. Here’s a list of some of the top stories of the year from the WQLZ Music Minute: Runner up is The Black Keys running their mouth and their lawyers. They’ve talked smack about Nickelback, receiving praise from most of us, and they also sued Home Depot and Pizza Hut for copyright infringement.

At No. 5, the inaugural Orion Music + More Festival—Metallica saw a void where Ozzfest was and decided to make their own. The festival in 2013 is scheduled early June in Detroit.

In at No. 4, the deaths of music icons including Beastie Boys founder Adam Yauch and Jim Marshall from Marshall amps. That’s not to belittle the others that died this year, including Dick Clark and legendary voice Donna Summers, just to name a few.

At no. 3 … two words … stage collapses. On the heels of last year’s stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair which killed a dozen people, there were two collapses at concerts that proved fatal. One of Radiohead’s roadies died when a stage collapsed in Toronto this past June. That happened as the stage was being set up. The band canceled their show. Another collapse wasn’t a stage, it was an advertising scaffolding. That killed one concert goer at a Linkin Park show in South Africa. They did not cancel their concert.

At No. 2, Green Day’s publicity leads to rehab for Billie Joe Armstrong. The band had a ton of publicity leading up to the release of the first album of their trilogy. That also led to Armstrong to lose his s**t and landing in rehab for alcohol abuse.

And, at No. 1, Lamb of God front man Randy Blythe being held for weeks in Prague, eventually being charged in the death of a fan who was thrown off stage several times during a concert. The fan died days after being thrown off stage. Blythe proclaims his innocence.

Here's to another year.

Happy New Year from WQLZ

Metallica's James rocking the stage and looking forward to Orion 2013
Metallica's James rocking the stage and looking forward to Orion 2013

Home base Detroit

The site has been claimed for the second annual Orion Music + More Festival. Metallica will take their two day rock/carnival-type festival to the Belle Isle in Detroit. Apparently, that will be the location for the next few Orion festivals. The Detroit City Council agenda has a contract on that location for up to 2015 with Orion. With nearly 1,000 acrs of land, Belle Isle is located right next to the Canadian border, so it’s sure to be an excellent venue for a summertime festival. The 2013 Orion Music + More Festival is scheduled for June 8-9th.

Michaels cameo

“Bret Michaels slider still in beta,” that’s the final line of a new commercial featuring the Poison front man. The ad features a couple sitting on a couch with a laptop checking their credit at a credit checking website. The site touts their new Score Planner with sliders that changes your credit score for different variables. On the site featured in the commercial there’s a “Bret Michaels Slider.” When they tweak that, Michaels appears in their living room singing “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn.” Gimmicky, but funny.  Watch that below or at this link.

Playing Sin City

The Black Keys have had one hell of a 2012 and now they plan on ringing in the New Year with a show in Las Vegas. Monday night the duo will be performing for the first time in Sin City, and they say they’re gonna bring with them several musicians to perform on stage. Typically, the two piece band has to deconstruct their songs when performing live. Having a few more musicians on stage to perform helps them keep the songs close to how they were recorded. In 2012, The Black Keys exploded across rock radio with hit after hit. They’re also up for a bunch of Grammy awards. Let’s not forget to mention the lawsuit they filed against Home Depot and Pizza Hut, plus the ill will they sent towards Nickelback. Way to keep it classy, guys!

Motorheadphones

The New Year will welcome some new headgear from Motorhead, of all people. January 8th, the band will unveil their new headphones they’re dubbing Motorheadphones … get it? Ha! They claim the new Motorheadphones have a bombastic sound that is 6 to 10 times more powerful than regular headphones. Too bad it’s after Christmas. They missed the boat on that one.

Scaccia Dies on Stage, Next Album to be Big, More Songs in the Can, Planned Tour, and Papa Roach Live

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Scaccia dies on stage

Mike Saccia playing guitar on stage
Mike Saccia playing guitar on stage

It’s never good news when a band member dies. It’s especially never good news when that band member dies on stage while performing. That’s what happened over the holiday weekend to Ministry guitarist Mike Scaccia while he was performing with his other band down in Fort Worth, Texas. It’s reported that Scaccia was having a seizure onstage when he was performing with Rigor Mortis. Authorities ruled the 47-year-old’s death a sudden heart attack due to heart disease. Ministry front man Al Jourgensen says he lost his little brother and his best friend. He says that “Life without Mikey is like orange juice without pulp – kind of bland.”

Next album to be big

They’re headed into the studio next month to begin recording their new album and front man M. Shadows says the forthcoming Avenged Sevenfold attempt will have much bigger riffs. He tells the UK’s NME magazine that the band is working to ensure every song has some big guitar riffs and heavy grooves. There’s no word on an expected release date.

More songs in the can

Megadeth says they’re a few songs deep into their next album. Front man Dave Mustaine says that the band has already recorded three songs and is in the process of getting the rest of a new album pieced together. There’s no expected release date to the follow up of Megadeth’s Th1rt3en, which was released earlier this year and sold just over 40,000 copies in its first week.

Planned tour

The Black Crows are ending their hiatus with a tour in the New Year. After saying they would take an indefinite hiatus no long ago, the band has announced they’ll play a handful of dates in the UK before coming over the US for a 21-city tour. They’ll be in Chicago at the Vic April 16th and 17th and in St. Louis at The Pageant April 19th.

Papa Roach live

Later this week, Papa Roach will be featured on Guitar Center’s Guitar Center Sessions. There’s a preview clip online showing the band performing the song “Getting Away with Murder.” The band will be featured performing live this Friday exclusively for Direct TV subscribers on the Audience channel. Check your local listings.

Tour to be filmed

Stone Sour’s Corey Taylor has revealed plans to record and release a live DVD around the House of Gold and Bones concept albums. Taylor says that when the band hits the road in 2014, they’ll bring cameras with them to capture all the craziness of their shows. The cool thing is, they plan on stopping in each market for two shows each. The first night they’ll play House of Gold and Bones Part 1 from top to bottom. The next night they’ll play Part 2.

New Killswitch album out in April

Killswitch Engage will be releasing their new album in April 2013. That was the announcement at a show last week and the band says they’re blown away by front man Jesse Leach’s performance. Leach rejoined the band after years of being away—but things were not completely set in stone. Bassist Mike D’Antonio said that Leach wanted to record two songs, go on tour to see how the band worked together, and then started busting out all kinds of new and unique stuff for the new album. Leach was Killswitch’s original singer, but left the band only to come back after a nearly 10 year break.

Numbers Say Rock is Deadly, Expected Economic Impact, and Nice Gag Gift

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Just some of the rock stars dead at 27
Just some of the rock stars dead at 27

Numbers say rock is deadly

Warning: Playing rock and roll music is hazardous to your health … or so says some lab coat shrinks over in England who spend too much time crunching numbers and looking for causality in the wrong places. The group of researchers looked at 15-hundred different music groups spanning multiple music genres. Of those, 137 stars had died, or 9.2 percent. What about that notorious 27 club that Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse are part of? Well, the actual average age for rock star deaths is 45.2 for US rock stars. It was even earlier for European performers. Solo acts had twice the death rate than members of bands.

Expected economic impact

Metallica hopes to revitalize Detroit’s economy, at least for a few days, by bringing the motor city their second annual Orion Music + More Festival. The band released a 41-second trailer featuring footage from the first festival held this year in Atlantic City. Plans are to bring the festival to Detroit June 8-9th, 2013. There’s no indication of who’ll be joining Metallica for the two-day festival, but it’s sure to be off the hook.

Nice gag gift

If you’re a fan of the mellow stylings of Bush’s “Glycerin” and also a fan of No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani, then you’re in luck. Earlier this month, Gavin Rosdale and Stefani performed the song together on stage to an unsuspecting audience. There’s fan shot footage complete with screams from wannabe tweener girls and other obsessed fans. Now you can download the duet on iTunes. You could get it as gag gift for someone. I’ll think I’ll take a pass on that one.

New Lyric Video, Tapping Grohl, Chick Talk and Heading to the Studio

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

New lyric video

Coheed and Cambria have released a new video for their latest single “The Hard Sell,” following a trend from a ton of other artists who seem to be copping out and hiring some dude with a fancy text generating program instead of getting a high-priced director to put out a concept video. The tune will be on the second installment of the bands Aftermath concept albums. A box set, featuring both concept albums and a 64-page book will be available late January.

Tapping Grohl

Soundgarden is enlisting the directing capabilities of Dave Grohl for the video of their forthcoming single “By Crooked Steps.” The song is one of the more straightforward rock songs on the new album, so that in combo with Grohl, it should be worth the wait. How long do we wait? Not sure … a release date has yet to be announced.

Chick talk

Some heavy hitting female rockers are taking part in a special series being put out by The Grammys. The Twitter QnA featuring Halestorms’ Lizzy Hale and In This Moment’s Maria Brink can be seen by checking out Twitter.com/TwitterMusic. It’s an effort to hype up the increasingly irrelevant Grammy Awards which will be held February 10th.

Heading to the studio

Garbage is gearing up to hit the studio after the release of their successful album Not Your Kind of People. Drummer and famed rock producer Butch Vig tells Rolling Stone Magazine that the band will hit the studio in January and February. Front woman Shirley Manson says that the band will be taking a new approach. Instead of working on an entirely new album, they will release a few new songs here and there and tour extensively.

Ghost Writer, Tour Details Today, Bloody Goth Metal Show, and Video Game Music

Cory Taylor's double middle fingers not towards you ... it's towards the ghosts
Corey Taylor's double middle fingers not towards you ... it's towards the ghosts

Ghost writer

Corey Taylor is a busy dude. It seems more likely he’ll put out a new book before he puts out a new Slipknot album. The Slipknot/Stone Sour front man says that his next book will be about ghosts. Earlier this year he put out a book about being a sinner titled Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument about Born Bad or Damaged Good. The working titled for his new book about ghosts is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Heaven. Taylor says the book will be about his experiences with ghosts, which he claims will freak people out. There’s no expected release date for the new book yet, but we are expecting the second House of Gold and Bones album next year with a comic book released shortly thereafter. Plus there’s talks of a movie based on that concept album.

Tour details today

Flyleaf and Drowning Pool have hooked up to announce a new tour. The tour will be in February and March, but exact details of dates and cities have not yet been released. That’s expected out today. Flyleaf just released a new album but immediately changed singers. Drowning Pool also recently changed singers. They’re now on their 4th or 5th singer … I don’t know. I lose count.

Bloody goth metal show

If you’ve ever wanted to see a blood bath outside of a live Gwar show, this may be just what you need. Cradle of Filth, the super-goth metal band from the UK, is coming to the US with a date in Chicago at the House of Blues March 21st. They’ll be with The Faceless, Decapitated and The Agonist which sounds like a fun night of family entertainment.

Video game music

System of a Down front man Serj Tankian is taking a crack at writing the score for a video game. Tankian will be the composer for the music of the game Morning Star, which will be out Spring of 2013.

Manson's Ear post stitches, from his Facebook Page

Sound City, the documentary by Dave Grohl about a studio where some epic albums were cut and mixed, includes a soundtrack. On that sound track will be a slew of different collaborations featuring the likes of Rage Against the Machine’s Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk, Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor, Queens of the Stone Age front man Josh Homme, Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins and Pat Smear, Slipknot and Stone Sour front man Cory Taylor, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, and more. Grohl is featured on every track. More than likely, he’s either playing drums, guitar or singing. The soundtrack, titled Sound City – Reel to Reel, will be out March 12th. The documentary will be available February 1st. You can pre-order the collection on iTunes right now. The studio version of the song “Cut Me Some Slack,” featuring the remaining members of Nirvana and Paul McCartney, a song that was featured at the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy Benefit concert, is available to purchase on iTunes right now (you get the tune when pre-ordering the soundtrack).

Ear Stitches

Oh, if you didn’t hear, Marilyn Manson had to get a ton of stitches in his ear. A posting last week to the Goth rocker’s Facebook page indicated that he got into a brawl overseas that ended up with him in the hospital getting two dozen stitches. The rocker was in Switzerland during the Twins of Evil Tour where he got into an altercation which left his ear bloodied. He claims to have gotten the upper hand in the fight. No other details were immediately available.

Blasting Fans for Disrespect, and Neil Tells Gun Fans F**k You

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Randy Blythe uses social media to scream at disrespectful fans
Randy Blythe uses social media to scream at disrespectful fans

Blasting fans for disrespect

Lamb of God front man Randy Blythe has an entirely different perspective of some of his fans after he tried to honor the victims of Friday’s elementary school shooting. The band performed in Oregon Friday where they tried to take a sixty second moment of silence to remember the 20 children and 6 adults that were senselessly murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, but some in the audience weren’t having it. During the moment of silence, there were some in the audience that didn’t respect the request … some people even laughing and cursing. After the show, Blythe took to social media to express his displeasure saying that he’s never been as disgusted with his audience as he was after Friday’s show. He says he about walked off the stage. The message he has for those that wouldn’t keep their mouths shut during the moment of silence is to look in the mirror and see “you’re a piece of s**t.” He also apologized to those in the metal community that respected the moment of silence, saying that those with disrespect give the community a bad name.

Neil tells gun fans "F**k You"

Meanwhile Motley Crue front man Vince Neil is lashing out against some of his fans for expressing their Second Amendment rights in the face of Neil calling for gun restrictions. He says that some of his fans care more about their guns more than they care about dead children. Neil even went as far as to say “F**K YOU to everyone who puts guns in front of kids!! Do not come to ANY shows! You are sick!!”

Editors Note: The Second Amendment clearly says

“A well regulated militia being necessary for the security of a free state the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” …

I’ll add, that’s the case regardless of how many gun crimes are hyped by the media.

$30 million raised, No Love for McCartney, and It's On The Soundtrack

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

$30 million raised

The numbers are in for the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy Benefit. And considering that tickets were somewhere in the range of $150 to $2,500, it’s no surprise they made bank! The six-hour long concert featuring a ton of diverse artists and collaborations brought in over $30 million. That’s just from ticket sales and does not including all of the pledges made from viewers who watched the show on TV networks around the world. Now they just have to be sure the money gets to where it needs to go and not pad the pockets of scamsters and fraudsters.

Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney (with a new hair cut) and Chris Novoselic
Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney (with a new hair cut) and Chris Novoselic

No Love for McCartney

At that benefit concert Wednesday Beatles star Paul McCartney welcomed on stage the surviving members of Nirvana. Everyone I’ve talked to thought it was a great performance. There’s one person who thought it wasn’t amusing. Who is that wench that doesn’t care too much for McCartney playing on stage with Nirvana in place of late front man Kurt Cobain? Courtney Love, of course! Apparently Love isn’t a fan of McCartney. She said that if John Lennon were still alive and filling in place of her dead husband that “would be cool.” Lennon’s dead, my dear.

It's on the soundtrack

By the way, that song that was played on stage by McCartney, Dave Grohl, Chris Novelcelic and Pat Smear, was actually recorded in Grohl’s home studio and will appear on the soundtrack of the forthcoming Sound City documentary directed by Grohl. The movie comes out February 1st and you can pre-purchase the film online at SoundCityMovie.com.

12-12-12, Heavy Metal, Jedi and Satanism, and Another video posted online

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

12-12-12

Surely you’ve heard about the Hurricane Sandy relief concert that was held in New York yesterday on 12-12-12. If you didn’t hear, there was a benefit concert for Hurricane Sandy yesterday. The show featured a huge and very diverse lineup of artists from Bruce Springstien, Bon Jovi, Tom Waits, The Rolling Stones, Roger Waters, Eddie Vedder, and on and on and on. But one major note to pass along was a bizarre performance during Beatle’s legend Paul McCartney’s set. At the tail end of the concert, which was sold out and aired on hundreds of networks all around the world, McCartney brought out Nirvana’s Dave Grohl, Chris Novoselic and Pat Smear to perform a new tune called “Cut Me Some Slack.” Video of that performance is available online.

Heavy Metal, Jedi and Satanism

In other big news, Heavy Metal is a bigger religion in the UK than Satanism, but not quite as big a draw as the Jedi faith! That’s according to The Guardian news outlet. Apparently in their recent census, 6,000 people put down in the slot inquiring about religious affiliation “Heavy Metal” while only 1,893 peopled marked down Satanism. However 176,632 people registered as Jedi. What’s funnier, that people think Jedi is real or that there’s such disrespect for religion!?!

Rock Hall inductees announced

Rush fans, you finally did it! You got Rush to be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame! For the first time, organizers at the Rock Hall allowed for fans to vote on who they think should be inducted and sure as s**t, fans decided it was due time for Rush to get up in that bitch! Guitarist Alex Lifeson says fans were hurt that the band was snubbed for years, but we know it was eating at you even more, Alex! Some others that are included in the Rock Hall induction list include Donna Summer, who just passed away this year, Public Enemy, Randy Newman, Heart and Albert King. The ceremony will be April 18th in trendy L.A.

New music service

Move over Pandora, Spotify or whatever other music service you’ve been using, there’s a new one coming to town and it has the backing of an odd pair. Named Daisy, the new music service is being backed by Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor and Hip Hop legend Dr. Dre. Reznor says Daisy will be a system that will help listeners find new music. Not sure how that’s different from the other services out there, but whatever. One thing to consider is that a lot of these music services charge for premium service. Forget that. Keep it here with WQLZ. We won’t charge you or track your listening habits through intrusive apps. Plus you’ve got me (Bishop), so that’s a plus! In other Nine Inch Nails news, Reznor says that Interscope plans on dropping a Nine Inch Nails best of record that will feature two new songs. The release is expected sometime in 2014.

Buckcherry has released online an unedited version of their first single from the forthcoming album Confessions. The song titled “Gluttony” is posted to YouTube as a lyric video and is typical Buckcherry in it’s fast-paced party ballad theme. The song is about someone being accused of drinking and effing too much and about someone loosing control of themselves to the enemy of gluttony. The album is due out February 19th and is based on the so-called seven deadly sins: wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. The lyric video is online now and the track is available through iTunes starting today.  Watch the video below or at this link.

The trilogy is complete

Green Day has released the third album in their trilogy. The release of iTre! was supposed to come out early next year, but the band decided to bump up the release for whatever reason. iDos! came out last month and iUno! has already cracked onto the Billboard charts and made Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 50 albums of 2012. The band plans on releasing a documentary about the trilogy titled iQuatro! sometime early next year.

Quebec Magnetic out now

Also out today is Metallica’s Quebec Magnetic. The live DVD is the first release from the band’s newly created record label Blackened Records and features footage from Metallica’s Halloween weekend shows in Quebec a couple of years ago.

Remembering Dimebag

Dimebag Darrell Abbott
Dimebag Darrell Abbott

Saturday marks a very sad day for the metal world as rockers remember one of the greatest contributors to the industry. Back in 2004 on December 8th, Pantera and Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott was murdered while on stage by a crazed gunman. That Columbus, Ohio show where Damageplan was performing also happened to be the show that gunman Nathan Gale decided to bring a loaded 9mm handgun shooting Abbott three times in the head and then shooting and killing three others. We also remember the band’s head of security, Jeff “Mayhem” Thompson, who was killed tackling Gale. The venue’s employee Erin Halk was also killed. Audience member Nathan Bray was killed while trying to perform CPR on Abbott and Thompson. In honor of those killed, WQLZ will air a Pantera or Damageplan song every hour Saturday. Rock on, Dimebag!

10 Years in town this weekend

Saturday at Boondocks, it’s 10 Years! The Springfield venue on way north Dirksen welcomes 10 Years with special guests Red Letter Merchant and Atrya. Can’t wait for that show Saturday? You may luck out and find someone selling tickets outside of the sold out show down at Pops where Chevelle is playing tonight. 10 Years will be opening up for that sold out Chevelle show at Pops in Sauget tonight.

The Grammy Award, which in this era of MP3's and iPods, seems a sad relic from the past

Boring Grammy Season for the Rock World

The Grammy nominations were unveiled last night down in Nashville, the first time the show made it back to Music City since the 70s. During the nominating ceremony, a sad list of rock nominees was presented. For the Rock category, The Black Keys made it in, but so did folksters Mumford and Sons, Coldplay, Alabama Shakes and other non rockers. For the Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal category, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Halestorm, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson and Lamb of God all got nods. There are over 80 different categories for this year’s Grammy Awards, which will surely be the most boring award ceremony ever.

Hitting the road

The 18-date tour will then end up in Denver February 17th. Stone Sour is expected to release House of Gold and Bones Part 2 shortly after the tour. Metallica samples Quebec Magnetic

Metallica is super excited about the release of Quebec Magnetic that they’ve released a portion of the video online. By portion, I mean one song, but it’s eight minutes of pure live Metallica goodness. Be sure to watch the eight minute video for “The Day That Never Comes.” Quebec Magnetic hits stores December 11th.  Watch the video below or at this link.

What's in the f**king box?

Also December 11th, Buckcherry plans to release the first single from their forthcoming album Confessions. Expect to hear the first single “Gluttony” sometime next week. If you haven’t picked up on the theme, the new album will feature songs about the seven deadly sins: wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and of course gluttony. The band will be previewing new songs from the album while they tour with Kid Rock beginning in February. The album is expected out shortly thereafter.

He's Been Officially Charged, and Documentary to Premier at Sundance

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

He's been officially charged

Randy Blythe in a Prague Court
Randy Blythe in a Prague Court

The saga of Randy Blythe continues with the addition formal manslaughter charges. Authorities in Prague leveled the charge of manslaughter with intent to cause bodily harm against the Lamb of God front man. This all stems from a 2010 concert in Prague where Blythe is accused of throwing a fan off the stage multiple times. The final time the fan was thrown off the stage, he hit his head and died days later. Larry Mazer, the band’s manager, says Blythe responded to a large number of fans who tend to rush the stage during performances, but with lax security, fans were able to make it up on the stage where security and Blythe proceeded to throw people away from the band. Mazer is also providing some insight into a possible defense saying that he did not intend to harm anybody. Blythe was held in a Prauge jail for five weeks earlier this year. He was released on bail.

Documentary to premier at Sundance

The much anticipated Dave Grohl produced documentary about the studio his band Nirvana recorded one of their epic albums is set to premier at Sundance Film Festival. Titled Sound City, the film will feature artists like Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, Nine Inch Nails’ front man Trent Reznor and Garbage drummer and renowned producer Butch Vig. Sundance takes place January 17 thru 27 in and around the Salt Lake City area. There’s no word yet on if there’ll be a theatrical or online release.

Boondocks Shows, They're Free From Warner, and Kennedy Honorees

The WQLZ Music Minute--Music news written by Bishop for 92.7 WQLZ, The Rock Station

Boondocks in Springfield

Boondocks shows

Thought the Boondocks won’t be welcoming Sevendust in February, as had been initially reported, they will be welcoming a few other artists here in Springfield. December 8th, 10 Years will hit the stage at Boondocks. Be listening to WQLZ for your chance to win tickets. Also at Boondocks January 18th, legendary Skid Row front man Sabastian Bach will bring his solo act to Springfield. For more details about the fumbled Sevendust show, head over to WQLZ.com and click the Music Minute.

They're free from Warner

Metallica is now free from Warner Brothers Music! And they’ve actually secured the rights to their session tapes and long-form videos. That deal was struck way back in 1994. Now they are free of Warner and starting up their own record label. Titled Blackened Records, the first release will be Metallica’s live DVD/BluRay Quebec Magnetic. The release will feature over 20 performances, over three hours of content, plus backstage interviews with the band. Quebeck Magnetic hits shelves December 11th.

Kennedy Honorees

Led Zeppelin received the Kennedy Center Honor, which means … well, I’m not sure what that means. Either way, the band will be on David Leetterman who also received the Kennedy Center Honor. So, they are gonna do a rare TV interview on Letterman’s show tonight. They’ll be promoting their concert DVD Celebration Day. Unfortunately, they don’t plan on performing tonight.
