  All Day Geocaching   Get your family out to experience our parks with geocaching, a fun high tech scavenger hunt. Starting this spring, search for Springfield Park District's 10 caches hidden throughout the park district. Find exciting, first to find prizes, as well as passes and other fun prizes.   All Day Benld Italian American Days   The Italian Club of Benld hosts its annual celebration Memorial Day weekend at the Benld City Park. Proceeds from the festival are used to fund community projects throughout the year. Live bands and dancing each night. Carnival and food. 4-11:30pm Fri-Sat, 11am-11pm Sun, 12-5pm Mon.
 
  All Day Early Bird Tennis Tournament   The Early Bird Tournament, the first of three tennis tournaments, will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 either at the Velasco Tennis Center in Washington Park or Sacred Heart Griffin tennis courts depending on planned construction at Washington Park. The Springfield Tennis Association (STA) annually presents this unsanctioned tournament and two other USTA sanctioned tournaments, the Adult Open and Junior Open, later in the tennis season. The Early Bird is designed to be fast-paced, for players of all ages, and for both traditional tournament players and casual players looking for a fun day of tennis in the park. Trophies will be awarded to the champions and runners-up in the singles division. Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles Mixed Doubles Formats. Matches will be 10 Game-Pro Sets until the Finals – keeping the tournament moving! The tournament also includes a Consolation Round, so all players will get at least 2 matches. The entry fee is $15 per player per event or $25 for two events. Players can go to www.springfieldtennis.wix.com/kelly to download and return the entry form or pick up and mail to the STA, 808 Bruns Lane, Springfield, IL 62704 by Thursday, May 23, 2013.   8:00AM 12:30PM Farmers Market   Live, work, play, and be healthy! Downtown Springfield, Inc. (DSI) invites the public to attend opening day ribbon cutting and festivities for the Old Capitol Farmers’ Market, presented by St. John’s Hospital, Wednesday, May 15 at 10 a.m.; with live music by the Frank Trompeter Quartet, Celebrity Chef Demonstration by Ashley Meyer of Real Cuisine Restaurant & Catering, and free cake (while it lasts) made by Incredibly Delicious. The Market will be held 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturday’s May 15 – October 26 and is located on Adams Street between Fifth and Second streets. With nearly three full blocks of vendors there is an outstanding variety of produce, baked goods, meats, cheese, plants and many other specialty items. The Market accepts LINK, Debit, and Credit Card transactions for the purchase of Market Tokens ($1.00 each). The Market Token Station will be located at Development Services Group, 401 E. Adams (NE corner of Fourth and Adams) and available 8 a.m. to noon each Market day. Vendors will also continue to accept cash, checks, WIC and Senior Coupons. DSI again received grant funding from LINK UP Illinois to provide Double Value tokens for Link cardholders; LINK UP Illinois is a program of Experimental Station, in partnership with Wholesome Wave and the Illinois Farmers Market Association. LINK customers may receive a maximum of $10 of Double Value tokens per market day until grant funds are expended.
 
  12:00PM 4:00PM Home Tours   April 20 through Sept. 30, Iles House open to the public Wednesdays and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. Visitors are introduced to the history and architecture of the Iles House, Springfield’s oldest home, and provided tours of the house and the Barringer collection of early Illinois furnishings. The new Iles House exhibit: Camp Butler: A Civil War Story is featured in the downstairs Springfield Museum. The story is told through artifacts and documents, many from private collections. Curators will be on hand to talk about collections, and refreshments will be served. Donations encouraged. Visiting Artisans Program. Saturdays through Sept, the house will have blacksmith, civil war cooking, shoemaker, and more. Sixteen different crafters from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

The Capital City Biathlon will take place again this year on Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 a.m. The run will be 3.1 miles and the bike will be 15 miles. It costs $40/individual ($50 after April 26) and $75/team ($85 after April 26). Packet pick up is from 4 to 7 p.m. on May 24 at the Lake Springfield Beach House.   7:30AM 12:00PM Passavant-Powerade 5K and 10K   The 21st Annual Passavant-Powerade 5K and 10K is Saturday, May 25, at Passavant. The Race is the longest consecutive running competitive event in Jacksonville. This year's Race is being dedicated in memory of local broadcaster/businessman Jerry Symons. Symons served as the "voice" of the Passavant-Powerade Race for many years. The race and crew shirts will feature a special memorial emblem in Symons' honor. Race Information: • Saturday, May 25, 2013, 7:30 a.m. start at Passavant Area Hospital. • Proceeds benefit Girls on the Run (GOTR)-Jacksonville. GOTR is a self-esteem program for girls, ages 8 to 13. • On-line registration and more details at passavanthospital.com. Advance entry fee is $20; $23 day of Race. Discounts available for members of the Springfield Road Runners Club (SRRC).   8:00AM 12:00PM Brian McMillen Memorial 5K Run/Walk, 10K Run   Lincoln Land Community College’s Veterans Club is sponsoring its annual Brian McMillen Memorial 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run Saturday, May 25 to raise funds in support of the LLCC Brian McMillen Veterans Scholarship and other charities. The Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. on the LLCC campus, 5250 Shepherd Road, Springfield. Participants may register online. Registrations also will be accepted at the event. Cost for the 5K run/walk is $20, $25 on race day; 10K run is $30, $35 on race day. Awards will be presented in several categories. Run/Walk participants can also support their local high school athletic program through the Brian’s Challenge Grant. The $500 grant is given to the athletic department of the high school that has the highest number of runners/walkers participating in the 5K Run/Walk. Participants do not need to be athletes. McMillen, an LLCC alum and Illinois State Trooper, served as a Technical Sergeant in the Air National Guard and spent two years of active duty with the Air Force in Saudi Arabia and Romania. He worked in the LLCC Veterans Office while a student there. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois-Springfield and was pursuing a master’s degree when he lost his life at age 24 in the line of duty with the Illinois State Police. The LLCC Veterans Club was established to engage students and community members in service activities supporting veterans. Services include supporting troops overseas, performing local volunteer work, raising money to fund scholarships and assisting veterans in need. The Veterans Club established the Brian McMillen Scholarship to provide financial support to veterans attending LLCC.
