Langfelder Expects To Seek Higher Taxes In New City Budget

Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder will be asking aldermen to approve some tax increases when he presents the new city budget next month.

Faced with declining sales tax revenues and less money coming from the state, Langfelder says he will most likely revive some tax hike ideas that aldermen rejected earlier this year. They include a one-quarter-percent increase in the city sales tax and raising the city telecom tax from four to six percent.

The mayor also expects to include some cuts in the budget proposal, but says the areas that could produce the biggest savings, like the police and fire departments, don’t have very much room for cutting.
