Illinois’s Stack of Unpaid Bills Down to $12.5 Billion

Just like that, Illinois’s bill backlog has been cut by nearly one-fourth. The comptroller’s office says the state’s stack of unpaid bills is down to $12-and-a-half billion dollars. 

One week ago, it was more than $16 billion. Comptroller Susana Mendoza has used the proceeds of the state’s recent bond issue to begin paying down bills, with an emphasis on medical expenses and other bills that can trigger federal matching funds.
