Report: Rauner Wants Congress To Lift State Pension Mandate

Governor Bruce Rauner is hoping Congress might be able to do what the Illinois Supreme Court won’t do… ease up on the state’s pension obligations.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Rauner wants to investigate the possibility of Congress passing a law that would allow Illinois to ignore the state constitution’s mandate to pay full pension benefits… if it can be shown that the requirement is making it impossible to pay for essential state services.

The state has made multiple attempts to reduce its unfunded pension liability…but each one has fallen apart because of the constitutional provision that pensions cannot be reduce or diminished.
